Yahoo! and Google continue to experience great fluctuation in search results from day to day. In fact, search results can change from hour to hour in some cases. The separation of Yahoo! from Google has a lot of downside for those sites that had top search results for their most important keywords. On the flip side, the changes could mean a big opportunity for those who couldn't get a top listing before. The separation of the two powerhouses of Web page searches has doubled the opportunity for sites to get a top listing. Add to this the fact that these two search engines are indexing new pages at rates that haven't been seen possibly ever before, and it's understandble why some are really excited.
While some of our clients experienced a drop in their site rankings for their respective keywords initially, most have rebounded. Over the past few weeks we've been able to improve the rankings of many other sites and in some cases, sites that have never been able to get indexed have been added and indexed multiple times. So there is reason for most to be excited about the changes, while a few might find some disappointment.
Other news related to search engines is the status and direction of Microsoft's search engine, MSN Search. Microsoft's search engine will separate itself from Inktomi soon and their intention is to clobber both Google and Yahoo!
This is another piece of good news overall, as it provides another opportunity for other sites to make it to the top. Breaking the search engine monopoly that Google enjoyed will hurt a few sites in very real ways, but overall, the vast majority of searchers and site operators will benefit from the new players in the search engine war.
